Eggshell membrane fiber “ovoveil” wins Excellence Award at the 7th EcoPro Awards
Our initiative to upcycle eggshell membrane using the next-generation sustainable fiber “ovoveil” won the Excellence Award at the 7th EcoPro Awards hosted by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization.
Award System Aimed at Contributing to the Realization of Sustainability Transformation (SX)
The Eco-Professional Award is highly regarded by businesses, consumers, investors, and market stakeholders in the Japanese market. The award is held annually to recognize and promote the further development and dissemination of products, services, technologies, solutions, and business models that incorporate outstanding environmental considerations.
Eggshell Membrane Fiber ovoveil®
In Japan, approximately 2.6 million tons of chicken eggs are consumed annually, and around 10,000 tons of eggshell membranes are discarded as unused biomass by-products. We have established a supply chain to collect eggshell membranes in large quantities and hygienically, and developed ovoveil®, a regenerated cellulose fiber with 10% added eggshell membrane. ovoveil® is a skin- and environmentally-friendly fiber with a smooth texture similar to silk. We have begun selling yarn and fabric for apparel and consumer goods manufacturers and are collaborating with several textile manufacturers.
High Evaluation in Environmental, Social, and Economic Aspects
In the environmental aspect, ovoveil® was highly praised for upcycling eggshell membranes, which could not previously be reused, into high-value fiber products. Furthermore, the establishment of a route for purchasing eggshell membranes and product development in collaboration with apparel manufacturers, as well as efforts to explore new markets through cooperation with various stakeholders, were recognized in both the social and economic aspects.
Exhibiting at EcoPro 2024
The award ceremony will take place at EcoPro 2024, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight from December 4th to 6th, 2024. We will be showcasing ovoveil® and other eggshell membrane upcycling products.
