Feature

One of the important skin’s functions is its “barrier function”

“ovoveil” is a new material developed from eggshell membranes that is gentle on the skin.

Monitor tests have confirmed that wearing comfortable garments containing the moisture-retaining ovoveil helps support the skin’s natural barrier function, making it easier to retain moisture.

What is the barrier function?

Normal skin Skin with impaired barrierd function

The barrier function is a key role of the skin that protects against outside irritants such as allergens, bacteria, and viruses. It also prevents water loss from the skin, keeping it hydrated.
Healthy skin has a thin layer of natural oils on its surface that locks in moisture while also preventing the entry of irritants.

Measurements were taken before wearing, on Day 7, and Day 28.

Test Results Skin Barrier Function

Changes in transepidermal water loss (g/h·m²) Before wearing, after 1 week, after 4 weeks

The wear test confirmed that wearing ovoveil-blended fabric reduced the amount of moisture escaping from the skin compared to rayon-blended fabric. These results suggest that clothing made with ovoveil, a highly moisturizing functional fiber, has the effect of “maintaining the skin’s barrier function”.

A luxurious feel as soft as cashmere

ovoveil can create a refined texture comparable to silk or cashmere by optimizing the fiber structure, yarn and fabric.
The resulting fabric is gentle to the touch and perfect for garments worn directly against the skin.

A new standard of gentleness for both skin and thePlanet

ovoveil is a next-generation material whose texture and feel can be optimized by twisting the yarn and knitting or weaving the fabric in different ways.
When blended with other materials such as cotton and Tencel, it creates a smooth, moisture-rich texture that feels gentle and comfortable against the skin.
It is also gaining attention as an alternative to animal fibers such as silk and wool., Not only gentle on the skin, it is also a sustainable option that is kind to the environment.

Examples of Applications

Seven-Eleven stores at the Osaka Kansai Expo

The world’s first socks and hand towels made using ovoveil will be on sale at 7-Eleven stores located at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Eco-friendly “upcycling eggshell membrane”

ovoveil is gaining attention as a sustainable, eco-conscious material that gives new life to eggshell membranes, which have traditionally been discarded
By contributing to waste reduction and promoting resource circulation, our innitiative was honored with Excellence Award at the EcoPro Awards 2024.

Sustainable material circulation through eggshell membrane upcycling

In Japan, approximately 2.63 million tons of eggs are produced annually, with around 2.37 million tons consumed as food.
This leaves roughly 260,000 tons of eggshells, which are often discarded as waste, along with their valuable membranes go unused.
ovoveil is a sustainable material created by upcycling these discarded eggshell membranes.

Eco-friendly fiber that effectively utilizes eggshell membranes

Using eggshell membranes in textiles not only reduces waste, but also contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
For example, utilizing eggshell membranes that would previously have been discarded, can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 150 liters when producing a T-shirt containing 30% ovoveil.
ovoveil transforms discarded resources into valuable products.
